Abbey Lincoln, Apollo Theater 2003

Abbey Lincoln born on (August 5th, 1930, Died on August 14th, 2010). I shot this backstage at the Apollo Theater during the Jazz Foundation of Americas Yearly Fundraiser and Gala. I had photographed Abbey several times performing but never before backstage. I've had the gig as one of the primary photographers for the Jazz Foundation for over a quarter of a century! This is originally a color photo and is available as such but I love the warmth and intimacy of the sepia-toned. You can see that and a few more in my alphabetical database at this link: https://www.enidfarber.com/alphabetical-database-of-musicians-and-other-luminaries/stock-photo-list-l/

Geri Allen, Carnegie Hall 1991

Geri Allen, born on (June 12th 1957, Died on June 27th, 2017). I shot it and many more precious photos backstage at Carnegie Hall in 1991. I was profoundly sad to hear of her demise. She was just one year younger than me and died two days after my June 25th birthday from breast cancer, which I had a little bit of history of my own with. I chose to go the mastectomy route. I discovered mine very early and it had not metastasized. Geri was no so fortunate. However she left behind her many important contributions in jazz as well as the children she had with trumpeter Wallace Roney who also died way too soon. Here is a link to an article by John Murph in JazzTimes Magazine from 2004. https://jazztimes.com/features/profiles/geri-allen-mothership-connection/ which provided us with a beautifully written portrait of Geri at her home in Montclair, NJ. You can see more of Geri in my alphabetical database here: https://www.enidfarber.com/alphabetical-database-of-musicians-and-other-luminaries/stock-photo-list-a/

Nina Simone, Hunter College, NYC 1985

Nina Simone born on (February 21st, 1933, died on April 21st, 2003) at Assembly Hall Auditorium, Hunter College, NYC 1985, the year I moved to NYC from Atlanta to continue my jazz photography pursuit. How lucky was I?! This image was originally from a black and white negative and sepia-toned in the darkroom by me. It was then hand-painted. This edition is from a scanned copy printed on sumptuous archival paper. You can see more of my hand-painted photography here: https://www.enidfarber.com/hand-painted-fine-art/

Celia Cruz, Madison Square Garden, NYC 1994

Celia Cruz was born on October 21st, 1925, and died on July 16th, 2003.  I shot this photo of Celia during one of performances with the Fania All Stars at Madison Square Garden, NYC 1994. At that same show, I photographed a relatively unknown Mark Anthony (J Lo's ex) backstage when he had long flowing beautiful hair. Those photos are adorable and can be seen at in my database (https://www.enidfarber.com/alphabetical-database-of-musicians-and-other-luminaries/stock-photo-list-a/). More photos of Celia can be seen there along some iconic photos of her and Tito Puente backstage at the Blue Note Jazz Club in NYC in 1993 in my alphabetical database at this link.  (https://www.enidfarber.com/alphabetical-database-of-musicians-and-other-luminaries/stock-photo-list-c/)

Alice Coltrane, Joes Pub NYC 2002

Alice Coltrane was born on August 27, 1937 and died on January 12, 2007. This photo is from her appearance at Joe's Pub with son Ravi Coltrane in NYC 2002. It's the only time I was fortunate enough to photograph her but I have photographed Ravi on many occasions. My dear friend and poet Zoe Angelsey was a champion of Ravi when he was emerging as a man with enormous talent, however reticent to ride on his father, John's coattails. Zoe passed away, way too early from lung cancer in 2013. Please read about Zoe here: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5a258a1e0abd04962c1cae34/t/5f84989c147e743111519c55/1602525342012/Zoe+Anglesey--E+edits--for+Ishmael+Reed.pdf. Claire Daly, Peekskill, NY 2002

Claire Daly was born on February 26th,1958 and died on October 22nd, 2024. This photo was shot for her CD "Movin' On. I entitled it "Claire on the Stairs". When she passed I changed the title to "Claire's Stairway to Heaven". Claire's birthday was on the same day as my mother's, 28 years later. My mother lived till 93 and my father is still living at the age of 101 (on April 21st 2025). Life is not fair or guaranteed...

Please read about Claire here: https://downbeat.com/news/detail/in-memoriam-claire-daly-19582024. See more photos of her in my alphabetical database here: https://www.enidfarber.com/alphabetical-database-of-musicians-and-other-luminaries/stock-photo-list-d/

Lakecia Benjamin and Jazzmeia Horn, Charlie Parker Jazz Festival 2019

Lakecia Benjamin was born on October 20, 1982. Jazzmeia Horn was born April 16, 1991. These two incredible rising stars at the time, appeared together at the 2019 Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in Tompkins Square Park, NYC. They are both now (2025) very established, sought after performers whom I've had the pleasure to photograph many times and looking forward to many more!

Brandee Younger, Winter JazzFest, 2023

Brandee Younger was born on July 1st, 1983. I've had the pleasure to photograph her in many different venues and settings since her blast onto the scene. This was from the 2023 Winter JazzFest at the Williamsburg Opera House in Brooklyn, NY. Her expression is just what I most love about photography. It is the quintessential "decisive moment"!
