Benny was the cousin of Matt Golson, a man I met through my mother, when I was still a teenager in the south (Charlotte, NC). In 1974, my mother and I went to NYC on one of her buying trips for the clothing boutique she owned at the time, that catered to teens and pre-teens. Those trips and others during my childhood, to visit my grandparents in South Orange, NJ, were the catalyst and influence that led to my desire to live in the greatest city one day. In 1985 I fulfilled that desire and continued my journey to document the music and musicians I revered. In 1974 Matt Golson scored a ticket for me to see his cousin Benny and other legends at Carnegie Hall, my first time there. Little did I know that I would end up in NYC, photographing many legends in that hall and Benny at other venues and on other occasions. Everything came full circle.
I want to mark this first in a series of monthly prints, of a musician born in that month, with this image because it represents so much history in my career. The fan prints are specially priced for those who aren't collectors or don't have the funds for a limited edition print. I chose this particular image because of Benny's joie de vivre expression! I hope you like it too!!!
